Basics on Government Grants

 

With the current economic downturn, acquiring capital for business and other worthy ventures may be very difficult.  The government, in its effort to help their country, has come up with a grants program. This feature has been a part of the government infrastructure for decades but was not widely-known, except for those who are considered privileged. These are the only people who have been given such grants along with their immediate circle.

 

Almost all government departments and agencies have their own grants and loans program. This is so they can cater to those in need of capital or resources for the establishment of businesses, both small and big, or for the purchase of some necessary equipment. Each of these offices would have their own biases in terms of conferring the grant or the loan. For example, the Ministry of Agriculture would most likely finance those projects which are related to agriculture, while that of the Education department would deal with those endeavors leaning towards the development of educational undertakings.

 

Grants vs Loans

 

The advantage of having a grant over a government loan is that it does not have to be paid back as long as all the conditions have been met. Every type of loan or grant has attached stipulations as to the manner it will be spent, what it will be spent on, the type of accounting and auditing system to be used, and the related reporting requirements to be submitted regularly. In the case of loans, these are usually paid back with the same amount and usually with interest of varying percentage. For example, micro-credit loans are usually offered to certain sectors of the society at a very low interest rate.

The types of grants vary for each area or jurisdiction but at the same time there are also grants which are made available regardless of where the project is located. There are also grants for undertakings in other countries in collaboration with the government of that respective state or with foundations, non-government organizations and peoples’ organizations.

 

The amount intended for each particular project grant also differ with those just enough to operate a small or medium scale business to millions or billions of dollars for projects of vast scale. Usually the capacity to manage the grant is taken into consideration in making the decision as to whom it will be given.

 

How To Find Grants?

 

There are several ways in which to present the various grants up for grabs. The most basic thing is to prepare a project proposal to be presented to the funding agency. This would include the rationale of the project, its objectives, project site, target clientele, timetable, monitoring mechanisms, budget, contact person and other pertinent data needed by the funders. The proposal is one of the most crucial factors in obtaining a grant. It has to be done very well to make it a winning one. It takes certain know-how and some effort in order to obtain your loan, but the returns are considerable.

 

An interview usually follows and depending on the granting agency, a project site visit may also be done.
